A Living Haven, designed by Nick Shen and Allen Chang, is a duplex that offers a truly exceptional living experience. The lower level features the main living areas, including the living room, dining area, kitchen, master bedroom, and a multi-purpose studio. On the upper floor, one finds the children's playroom and bedrooms, with a connecting hallway that has been repurposed into a space of its own.
To guarantee the children's safety, a tempered glass wall extends from floor to ceiling, allowing natural light to flood the space and providing a unique vantage point for the children to gaze down at the first floor. The customized recessed lighting creates a soft ambiance and complements the specified white and natural wood color palette, adding to the overall charm of the design.
Smooth curves permeate and flow throughout the space, creating a sense of harmony and playfulness. From the arched door frames and curved edges of the side cabinet drawers and desks to the rounded forms of the kitchen cupboard, bathroom, stairway handrail, and dining room luminaires, every detail has been carefully crafted. The meticulous craftsmanship is evident in the 3mm gap between the staircase and the wall, showcasing the attention to detail and precision.
A key feature on the first floor is the transparent glass sliding doors that separate the space. This design element allows the family to enjoy each other's presence while engaging in individual activities. The addition of a whiteboard panel and customized bayonet locks promotes spontaneous doodling and play in a safe environment.
The designers have also incorporated terrazzo in the bathroom and kitchen, adding a touch of nostalgia to the space. Inspired by childhood memories spent in grandparents' homes, the terrazzo serves as a reminder of those cherished moments and a way to pass them on to the next generation. This subtle design element creates a connection between the past and the present, making the living space a vessel for connecting generations.
Living Haven is not just a beautifully designed space; it is a reflection of a father's love and eagerness to protect his children. The square interior and circular exterior design vocabulary embody a sense of security and gentleness. The expansive hallway on the upper floor, equipped with a sliding swing, encourages play and interaction between siblings. The designated playroom features a colorful rock-climbing wall, a showcase for figurines, and a hammock for reading, ensuring that home is truly where the fun is.
Located in Taipei, Taiwan, Living Haven is a testament to the creativity and innovation of Nick Shen and Allen Chang. Their meticulous attention to detail, thoughtful design choices, and commitment to creating a space that fosters joy and connection have earned them the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2020. This award recognizes their well-designed, practical, and innovative creation that meets professional and industrial requirements, contributing to a better world.
Living Haven is more than just a residential interior design; it is a haven for creating lasting memories and a space where functionality meets whimsy and artful design.
